I was appointed Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Science in 1996. During 1998-1999 I was also Clinical Director of Mental Health Services for Counties Manukau District Health Board and was Chair of the New Zealand Branch of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists over the same period.

In 2000 I became Head of the School of Biomedical & Health Sciences and over 2002-2004 acted as Head of the School of Population Health.  I was Deputy Dean of the Faculty from 2002 to 2005 before returning to the Department of Psychological Medicine where I was head of department until 2012. I continue to teach and research at the University where I am co-director of the Centre for Psychopharmacology and Neurodynamics within the Centre for Brain Research.  I originally became a member of the Board of the Anxiety New Zealand Trust in 2007 to support the trust in its clinical service and advocacy roles for people with anxiety disorders.  I have recently rejoined the board following a break since August 2012.

Michelle Proudfoot - Trustee

I've recently joined the board and the strengths that I bring with me is my ability to building relationships and business development but more importantly the passion and desire to help people.

Whilst I have not personally suffered from any of the disorders we treat, I know people who have and the struggles they've experienced.

I have worked in banking for over 20 years and held a variety of roles during this time.

I was born and bred in Gisborne but spent the last 16 years in Auckland.  I try to make the most of my spare time and enjoy running, travelling and spending time with family and friends.

Alfred Stowers – Trustee

My name is Alfred Stowers and I currently reside in Hamilton where my wife and I have lived since 2013. I am a company director of a recruitment business, a café and a start-up cleaning company. I bring to the Trust my experience in governance and operations management.

As well as my work with the Anxiety New Zealand Trust, I am also the deputy Chairperson for the New Zealand Rugby League Upper Central Zone.

I love sport, staying fit and healthy and helping people succeed. My motto: Leadership through Service.

Spike Xie - Trustee

I migrated to New Zealand over 10 years ago and was initially settled in Nelson. My degrees were obtained later in Otago University. I then moved to Auckland in 2010 and started my career in IT industry. Over the 6 years, I worked for software and architecture companies and played different roles in the IT field. Apart from my main occupation, I was a camp counselor at the Lions Club in the USA for two summers. I am passionate about philanthropic work. Joining Anxiety New Zealand gives me a different way of helping people. As a trustee, I brought in my IT skills, culture diversity and connections with Chinese community. I love playing touch rugby with friends and travelling with family.

I live with my wife Joy and have two independent children. Special interests involve sporting activities, gardening, music, theatre, travel and literature. ‘I have always believed that we should never dream small dreams as they lack the power to change the hearts of men or history’
